Alternative Energy

Alternative Energy – What Are Some of the Problems Associated With Today’s Energy Consumption?

The words renewable energy can conjure up many different images for many people, but what exactly does it mean? Generally, it’s the ability to replace an energy source with another one, such as using the sun to power your home or using the wind to run your machinery. However, renewable energy isn’t limited to these types of uses, in fact, it can be used for just about anything. Renewable means that the energy can be replaced, replenished, or gathered without degrading or destroying the source. These are some examples of renewable sources of energy:

Biomass Energy

This is perhaps the most commonly seen form of renewable energy because it can be seen all over us. In fact, the word biomass literally means “biodegradable matter”. Biodiversity is the idea that life can exist in various combinations without polluting the environment. You might have heard the term geothermal energy, which is essentially the heat energy stored beneath the earth’s surface. Some examples of biomass energy are wood, the fuel created from organic waste, agricultural and landscaping plant life, even carbon dioxide stored in permafrost.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The greenhouse gas emissions we produce in our homes come primarily from the burning of fossil fuels for warmth and energy. This means that there is a larger portion of our heat, electricity, and other forms of energy going into the earth’s atmosphere than we can use. However, there are many ways we can trap heat and electricity in non-combustible sources, such as rocks and concrete, and store them. One such way is by using greenhouses, which is essentially a large room heated by the sun, and the heat trapped within the stones is used to produce hot water, hot air, and even electricity. By using renewable energy, greenhouse gas emissions can be significantly reduced.

Pollution

A big problem with fossil fuels is that they emit lots of pollutants into the atmosphere. They are also known to cause global warming. For this reason, many governments have passed laws that limit the amount of carbon dioxide a company or organization can emit. As more renewable energy resources are used, fewer fossil fuels will be required to operate at the same level of production. As a result, less pollution will exist. It would be very hard for the earth to support life if the amount of carbon dioxide was doubled, for instance.

Sustainability

With the Earth’s resources are depleting, there is an increased chance of global warming, climate change, and other environmental disasters. By using renewable energy resources wisely, companies and individuals can reduce their impact on the environment. Many governments have passed laws requiring companies to source at least some of their renewable resources from within the country or promote an international effort to do so.

Wind and Solar Energy

Both of these renewable energy sources generate energy without any additional fossil fuel input. There is a large amount of potential energy from these sources, but the only real test is to develop more of them. The government of the U.S. has allocated a large amount of money to be invested in the development of solar and wind energy. The goals are to help develop more of these sources, and to make the process easier for consumers. The costs to implement these technologies are likely to continue to decrease as more people learn about them.
